Features & Benefits Of The Mighty Paw Retractable Dog Leash 2.0

If you're familiar with some of our other leashes, you'll notice that this particular one is a mix of several different styles - a 16' long leash, a standard walking leash AND a short traffic leash.

That said, our Mighty Paw Retractable Dog Leash 2.0 makes it easy and convenient to control your desired leash length. That’s because it features a one touch quick-lock braking system that doesn't jam.

Our heavy duty retractable leash is available in two sizes which makes it a great walking option for dogs up to 110lbs. Use our ⅜” lite version for dogs who weigh up to 50lbs, and our ½” standard version for dogs who weigh up to 110lbs.

Spoiler alert: Joanna's pups Nyx and Kane fall into the above 50lbs category!

Both feature a premium 16’ nylon tape leash as well as a durable stainless steel coil. Combined, they reduce jams for a stress-free walking experience.

Our 360° tangle-free swivel clip handles even the most playful dogs, and the u-shaped leash guide makes tangles a thing of the past.

We designed this leash with an ergonomic anti-slip handle that keeps your hands comfortable, even on long walks. The handle is even spacious enough to accomodate your gloved hand.

Last but not least, we also added a reflective safety ring and chose a heavy duty reflective nylon leash tape for ultimate night time visibility. You’ll also appreciate the bonus d-ring that holds poop bags or keys!

How To Use The Mighty Paw Retractable Dog Leash 2.0: Meet Joanna and Her Pups Nyx & Kane

Joanna and her pups Nyx and Kane live in beautiful Denver, Colorado. Nyx is a young black roan German Shorthaired Pointer (GSP) and Kane is a lovable black & white mutt.

They're all super active and out and about every single day, rain, snow or shine! With that in mind, Joanna mixes up her daily activities with the pups and uses our 1/2" Standard Retractable Dog Leash for the following:

  • Relaxed walks in her neighborhood
  • Recall and "stay" training
  • Hiking trips in open spaces

Relaxed walks in her neighborhood

Our Retractable 2.0 is perfect for shorter walks in Joanna's neighborhood. She's not asking Nyx and Kane for any obedience here, so the pups have the freedom to sniff around and do their business.

In case of oncoming traffic like fellow dogs or other people, Joanna can easily shorten the leash and even use it as a traffic leash tab.

Recall and "stay" training

This is something Joanna practices in a variety of locations - both in her neighborhood as well as on her hiking trips.

Recall training

The recall means that her dogs come to her when she calls their names, "Kane/Nyx, come!

Here's how she does it. She clips the Retractable Leash onto Nyx's or Kane's (tactical) collar, asks them to "stay", and then walks away a few steps. Then she calls her pups with an upbeat voice! When they come her way, she praises them verbally and also gives them a treat for a job well done. Good boy/girl!

Tip: If you try this with your pups and they're stubborn, you can gently redirect them your way using the leash. That's the good thing about practicing recalls on a long leash - while your pups have some sort of freedom, you remain in control!

When you're first starting out, you can begin with shorter distances like the one you see in Joanna's snow picture below. You can even begin with as little as just one or two steps away from your pup.

Tip: Chose a remote or boring area without a lot of distractions such as other dogs or hikers when you're first starting to practice the recall. That's exactly what Joanna demonstrates here - she's training in a (beautiful!) open space that's seemingly in the middle of nowhere.

    "Stay" training

The picture below features Kane in a "down-stay" position. That's what dog trainers call it when a dog holds his or her "down" position.

The sky (and your pup's patience and training!) are the limit as far as the duration of holding the position goes, but you can certainly start with very short "stays", truly as short as 1 to 2 seconds.

Practicing the "stay" command with Mighty Paw's Retractable Dog Leash 2.0

To do this, clip the Retractable Leash 2.0 onto your pup's collar and ask him to "stay". Simultaneously, hold out the palm of your hand in front of you so that your pup can see it, then take one step back. That's the hand signal for the "stay" command. Say something like "yes, good boy/girl" to reward their "stay" along with a tasty treat for a job well done.

Once they can hold their stay that way, slowly increase the distance between yourself and your pup.

This is where the retractable leash really comes in handy because it's much longer than a standard 6' leash!

Hiking trips in open spaces combined with the recall

Our Retractable 2.0 gives dogs up to 16' of freedom, so it's perfect for more relaxed and leisurely hikes in open spaces.

Joanna allows her pups to roam and sniff around to their heart's content when she's outside with them in these open spaces, but she also asks them to check in with her occasionally. When she does, she recalls them and then praises them warmly for a job well done.

Then they're allowed to continue sniffing!

    Any Cons?

If your pup weighs more than 110lbs, our Retractable Leash 2.0 won't be the ideal leash. It's also not a good fit for pullers if it's clipped to a standard collar. If you have a pup who pulls moderatly, I recommend you use the Retractable Leash 2.0 in combination with one of our Mighty Paw training collars. For example, the:

If your pup is a strong puller, give our Mighty Paw Dual-Handle Bungee Leash a try instead. The bungee feature reduces unneeded stress to the wrist, elbow, shoulder and neck!
