How to Train Your Dog to Ring A Bell to Go Potty

Hey there Mighty Paw fam!

We have a product that helps dogs communicate when they need to go outside.

Our Mighty Paw Smart Bell 2.0 works to stop common problems like:

  • barking at the door
  • scratching the door
  • jumping on the door
  • “accidents”

Most of all, it gives your dog the freedom to clearly communicate with you!

Some dogs “hold it” longer than they should because they don’t quite understand how to ask to go outside.

Our Smart Bell 2.0 is a wireless dog doorbell your dog easily learns to push with his nose or paw. It requires no batteries or tools to install. In fact, you can set it up in about 30 seconds!

The Smart Bell 2.0 comes with a training guide, and I’m also going to share the basic training tips with you now:

Step 1: Make sure your dog is comfortable with the sound of the bell and praise him for showing curiosity.

Step 2: Encourage your dog to bump the bell with his nose or paw. You can hold a treat right up to the Smart Bell and say something like “go outside” or “ring-ring.”

Give the treat when he bumps the button. Most dogs seem to want to use their nose vs. their paw.

Step 3: For the next few days, every time you take your dog outside for a potty break, have him ring the bell and give him a treat.

Eventually, he will associate ringing the bell with going outside to go potty.

Ongoing: The hardest part is patience because some dogs will think they need to wait for your command to ring the bell.

It might take your dog a couple of weeks to learn to ring the bell on his own, so be patient!

Here is a short (2 min) video we made with more info about our Smart Bell:

What if your dog rings the bell constantly?!

If your dog starts abusing the bell, you can just ignore him if you know he doesn’t have to go. Use your best judgement. Eventually he will learn to use the bell only when he has to go outside.

Would your dog benefit from a Smart Bell 2.0?
